There's no doubt regarding the popularity of the
Internet in our generation. When we speak of the Internet, we don't only
mean the world wide web (WWW) but also its brothers like FTP, Gopher,
etc. However, it is the WWW which has the most number of fans. The world
has witnessed the early stages of web publishing like the ones used by
the American government during the 60's. Since then, web publishing has
evolved from a simple, static, and limited type to a dynamic and robust
one.
Every web developer can be categorized in two types.
You could either be more of a web designer or more of a web programmer.
A web designer can create web pages but his creations are more of the
artistic type. Sites laden with complex images and intricate designs are
works of web designers. The next type is the web programmer. Sites made
by such people are usually merciful in terms of catering graphics and
images. However, they made sure that they make up for this by making their
sites more dynamic than those made by web designers. They use databases,
server-side scripting, and other features to compensate for their lack
of design. This does not mean that web designers cannot be a web programmer
and vice versa. You can be classified under both categories but you are
what your stronger point is. Be it web designer or web programmer, you
are still classified as a web developer. As the name suggests, you develop
web pages.
Some common tools used by web developers are: Editors,
Imaging Software and Browsers. This would get longer as you plan on the
complexity of your site. For example, a web programmer would usually need
an additional database and a web server for testing scripts.
With the web development boom, lots of people claim
to be web developers even though their only experience is through working
on their personal homepages. You are considered a web developer only when
at the minimum, you are capable of publishing useful material which would
be beneficial to others or beneficial to you not in terms of guestbook
entries but in terms of marketing yourself (like portfolio sites). In
short, once you start specializing in web programming or web designing,
you are more or less eligible to be called a web developer.
